What is DEX?

Digital technology is at the heart of all modern office-based jobs. From the computers we use, to the programmes we write, to the cloud storage solutions we save work onto, it’s hard to think of a modern job that doesn’t use digital technology. Knowledge workers, that is, anyone in the IT industry, rely on technology including computer systems day in and day out to perform their jobs to the best of their ability. Not only that, but customers rely on similar systems to provide the best customer experience possible. But what happens when the intersection between humans and digital technology goes wrong? We’re exploring how the digital employee experience can affect everyone from your staff to your customers.

Understanding DEX

Digital employee experience, or DEX, refers to the way your people interact with the digital technology and tools they use daily to carry out their tasks. A recent survey carried out by Scalable on 2,000 knowledge workers in the UK showed many negative opinions towards DEX. A shocking statistic claims that knowledge workers are finding themselves working an extra 3.1 weeks each year due to poor digital experiences. Forty-three percent of respondents said poor DEX has reduced their job satisfaction, and 29% said bad DEX has made them want to leave their jobs altogether.

But that’s not all, as many different pain points are causing poor DEX, including:

  • Friction using digital technology
  • Applications crashing
  • Notification overload
  • Forced application switching

These issues create an unhappy workforce and can lead to errors — which makes an unhappy business owner and unhappy customers. The solution? Improve your DEX and improve your productivity, staff job satisfaction and retention. But how can DEX be improved? And will it cost you more in the long run?

How to improve DEX

Poor DEX can be improved by focusing on ways to create a stronger employee experience, meaning happier employees and more motivated teams. Improvements don’t have to be expensive and can make a big difference.

1.   Collaboration tools

Siloed teams need ways to work together to achieve their business goals. Investing in the right collaborative tools can give your teams methods of working together across departments as well as physical divides. Organisational tools like Slack or Trello, or even storage solutions like Google Drive can all make your team’s lives and jobs easier to handle.

2.   Up-to-date software

Last year’s package won’t always do the trick. Maintaining up-to-date software packages can work in your favour by ensuring your team is using the most recent version of your digital tools. Small changes and updates don’t have to cost your whole budget, but with the global estimated IT spend at $5.1 trillion for 2024, it pays to invest.

3.   Cloud storage

Still saving and sending work across hefty physical servers? Investing in easy-to-use cloud storage means your teams don’t have to worry about where the file they need is saved, and it gives business owners peace of mind that everything is held securely in one centralised place. Earlier this year, Gartner reported a 13.8% increase in global spending on software, including a preference for cloud-based software.

4.   Strong cybersecurity

There is no strong DEX without strong cybersecurity. All digital tools and programmes need sufficient support and safety from the threats posed online. Indigo 21 offers a range of cybersecurity tools, including DDoS protection, DMARC and more.

5.   Reasonable adjustments

Some people in your team will need additional support and reasonable adjustments for their digital experience. Remember to find out if anyone needs extra support, such as screen readers or speech-to-text software.

Outsourcing to improve DEX

Of course, if making the full range of DEX improvements feels overwhelming or out of reach for your business, poor DEX can also be tackled by outsourcing. This approach can alleviate some of the common issues faced by poor DEX, including poor job satisfaction and employee retention. By bolstering your existing teams with on-demand offshore support, you can serve your customers better and achieve your business goals faster.
